Three Canadian Armed Forces Reservists Charged in Toronto Crypto-Kidnapping Probe

Toronto police announced 82 criminal charges following an investigation into an abduction targeting cryptocurrency assets, uncovering stolen military ammunition and firearms alongside three serving reservists.

Three members of the Canadian Armed Forces are among seven individuals facing 82 criminal charges after a Toronto police kidnapping investigation uncovered stolen military ammunition, firearms, and an alleged crypto-motivated abduction.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced the arrests on Wednesday following a probe that began when investigators were called to a North York intersection on July 25, 2026. The victim was allegedly forced into a vehicle, later released, and warned not to contact authorities. Detectives from the integrated kidnapping unit subsequently expanded the scope of the case after identifying additional suspects and uncovering organized criminal activity.

Investigators identified three of the accused—Talarambage Fernando, James Moreau, and Jack Miley—as members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Fernando and Moreau hold the rank of bombardier. The Department of National Defence noted that Fernando enrolled as a reservist in January 2020 without deploying, while Moreau joined in March 2018 and deployed on Operation Laser during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Police executed arrests across multiple dates, taking two suspects into custody within 24 hours of the initial abduction, three more on August 11, and the final two on September 24.

Toronto police integrated kidnapping unit Detective Superintendent Joe Matthews told reporters that the victim was targeted specifically for access to cryptocurrency assets. Demkiw emphasized that the law applies equally regardless of profession, stating, "Whether you are a member of the military—" before stressing accountability.

Ottawa hasn't explained how stolen military ammunition ended up in a suburban kidnapping plot.
